 Bad Curtain

  Charcoal on Paper, Painter’s Tape
  44” x 76”
  2023

Bad Curtain is an experiment. Where most of my work is small and intended to be hung on walls, this large scale work is hung with hooked bunjee cords from the ceiling, exposing both the front and back of the piece. The back consists of pages with notes, drawings from imagination, quick observational sketches, usually including figures, exploring form, anatomy, gesture, perspective... the components of visual art which interest me. My goal was to be able to draw from imagination and at the scale of the front of the piece consistently - this was an exercise in blowing up the size of what I was studying and what interests me.

At this time, I was very influenced by a collection of Kim Jung Gi’s erotic works, Omphalos. His artwork conveys a sense of believability although his scenes are always imaginary. Through his drawings is how I became interested in the elements of visual art I mentioned above. In figuring out my process of drawing, I found sexual poses to be especially challenging to recreate - be it from imagination or reference.

In the same way I challenged my self through the small sketches on the back of the piece, I continued to test my process by creating the larger scaled drawing on the frontside. The dynamism of this cartoon orgy was especially challenging to work out at this scale vs. the small sketch I made before hand.

This piece reminds me of a special time in my life. I was at about the three year mark of drawing consistently and taking it seriously. All I knew at the time were student grade / pre-developmental materials. Fancy oil paints and over priced sheets of Canson were of no interest - copy paper, charcoal, and dollar store stationary was top shelf to me. I feel this related to my unconventional study methods compared to those of my peers or professors in art school too.

This experiment showed me everything was coming together to form my process, to form who I am as an artist. From choice of material to interest in specific subjects, this is a good representation of how I was spending my time back then.
